Today, on his death anniversary, we pay heartfelt tribute to Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur, a stalwart of social justice, a fearless freedom fighter, and a true people’s leader. His life was dedicated to empowering the marginalized and bringing about meaningful reforms that transformed Indian society.
A Leader of the People
Born on January 24, 1924, in Pitaunjhia village (now Karpoori Gram) in Bihar, Karpoori Thakur rose from humble beginnings to become a beacon of hope for the oppressed. A man of immense integrity, he remained committed to Gandhian values and the upliftment of backward classes, even in the face of political opposition. His simplicity, honesty, and deep connection with the grassroots made him a beloved leader
A Freedom Fighter & Champion of Social Justice 
Thakur actively participated in the Quit India Movement (1942), standing against British rule and facing imprisonment. His political career was driven by the vision of a just and equal society, where education and opportunities were accessible to all, regardless of caste or economic background.
The Architect of Reservation for the Backward Classes
As Bihar’s Chief Minister (1977–1979), Karpoori Thakur introduced reservations for backward classes in government jobs and educational institutions, a landmark decision that paved the way for nationwide policies later adopted in the Mandal Commission recommendations. His commitment to social justice earned him the title of “Jan Nayak” (People’s Leader).
A Man Who Lived for Others
Despite holding high office, Karpoori Thakur led a simple life. He refused government perks and dedicated himself entirely to the service of the people. His politics were never about personal gain but about uplifting the voiceless and ensuring dignity for all.
His passing on February 17, 1988, left a void in Indian politics, but his ideals continue to guide leaders and activists fighting for equality and justice.
